Selection and Screening of Sperm Donors

Sperm donors are young, healthy men aged 18 to 35 from various social backgrounds. Most of them are students from higher education institutions.

All sperm donors undergo a rigorous selection process, which includes:

• Medical examination
• Semen analysis
• Sexual history assessment
• A series of DNA and blood tests

This process ensures that donors do not suffer from sexually transmitted or infectious diseases, such as:

• HIV (AIDS)
• Hepatitis B and C
• Syphilis
• Cytomegalovirus

• Various types of streptococcus
• Trichomonas
• Hereditary diseases

Due to this strict screening process, only 1 in 20 candidates becomes a sperm donor. The donor’s sperm is stored and frozen in liquid nitrogen, which can remain cryopreserved for years.

Donors are compensated, but they are genuinely motivated to help others with infertility issues. They are fully informed about what it means to become a sperm donor and sign an agreement declaring that they do not belong to risk groups and have not engaged in risky behavior (such as exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases). They waive all parental rights and responsibilities and are assured of complete anonymity.

Greek legislation mandates the anonymity of the sperm donor. Therefore, in Greece, we can only use sperm from anonymous donors. The identity of the registered donor is strictly confidential. However, sufficient information about each donor is provided to interested parties so they can make their choice based on their personal requirements.

Donor Selection Process

Specially trained counselors provide valuable guidance to help you find the right donor from a list of young, healthy, and quality donors who wish to share the gift of life with you.

Once you specify the key characteristics you would like your chosen donor to have, you can access a more detailed history. This includes:

• The donor’s physical characteristics (height, weight, eye color, hair color and type, body build)
• Ethnicity
• Blood type
• Some of their interests

Additionally, you can access information regarding the donor’s educational level, professional career, and medical history. You can also find out if the donor already has a family and children of his own. You will have full access to the sperm donor’s medical history. At your disposal is a long list of young, smart, and good-looking donors to choose from. Your choice will be based on your own personal criteria, and the final selection of the donor, who will be part of your treatment in your attempt to have a child, is yours.

Using Donor Sperm for IVF

Donor sperm can be used either for insemination or for IVF. Success rates are clearly higher in IVF compared to the insemination process.
