Sperm Cryopreservation

Sperm cryopreservation is a method in which a sperm sample is frozen for future use. This simple procedure can be performed either at home or at a sperm bank in a specially designed area. Regardless of where it is done, it is important to abstain from ejaculation for three to four days beforehand, as this can affect the quality of the sperm. The freezing process involves the use of appropriate cryoprotective substances, which aim to protect the spermatozoa during freezing. The material is then stored in special containers filled with liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C.

When is Sperm Cryopreservation Recommended?

Sperm cryopreservation is recommended for men who:

  • Are about to undergo radiotherapy or chemotherapy
  • Are exposed to high temperatures, chemicals, or radiation due to their work
  • Will be absent on the day the eggs are fertilized
  • Want to ensure fertility at an older age
  • Are receiving medication that may affect sperm quality due to a disease
  • Show a progressive decline in sperm parameters
  • Suffer from ejaculation problems and erectile dysfunction
  • Are athletes taking steroid substances with an anabolic effect

Preparation Before Sperm Cryopreservation

Before sperm cryopreservation, the man should undergo a blood test that includes screening for HIV I and II, HbsAg, VDRL, and HCV.

Success Rates of Cryopreserved Sperm

The success rates of cryopreserved sperm are quite high, and their fertilizing ability is comparable to that of fresh sperm. While some sperm cells may be damaged during the thawing process, this typically does not negatively affect the IVF procedure. The survival rate of frozen sperm is generally high, making it suitable for use in both classic IVF and micro-fertilization techniques such as ICSI.
